Project description
Dementia results in tremendous socio economic costs and loss of humane life years. Recent findings indicate that it is caused by inability of the brain to remove waste products due to a failure of glymphatic clearance system. OPEN consortium joins world leading researchers excelled in vascular biology, tissue sensing and neuroimaging to develop an effective treatment for dementia. Recent findings indicate that lost memory can be recovered by momentary opening of blood brain barrier. Our objective is to optimize the opening to boost insufficient brain clearance such that waste products become more effectively removed to stop brain degeneration. We aim to solve the full picture of the brain clearance system and find out the best way to increase the clearance for clinical use to treat demented patients. As an outcome of the project, we expect breakthroughs in the understanding how brain functionality can be maintained, thus delivering great scientific, clinical and societal values.
