Project description
Neoplasms are a challenging disease group as every single case is unique, consisting of multiple genomes – germline, and those of the neoplastic subclones. Also environmental factors play a significant role in the disease process. We have previously made seminal discoveries in identifying major human tumor genes, thus increasing our understanding on the basic concepts of neoplastic growth. The rapid advances in technologies continue to produce new data and opportunities towards novel scientific breakthroughs. The proposed CoETG is capable of advancing beyond the state-of-the-art in improving the understanding of the function of the genome, exploiting the public data, and creating and analyzing new key data sets from highly selected patient populations identified using unique Finnish registries that allow population-scale data mining, to bring genomic medicine into practice; a timely goal reflected by the recent Government decision to establish the National Genome and Cancer Centres.
