Project description
Next-generation wearables create a new powerful user interface to the Internet of Things (IoT), diminishing the borders between the real and digital worlds. This research provided a rigorous and systematic design of the mmWave wearable PHY layer with an emphasis on its MIMO operation, developing an in-depth understanding of the propagation environment in crowded areas. This project also developed new tools for estimating mmWave channels and devised new algorithms for mmWave MIMO communications. A major outcome of this research is rapidly reconfigurable and robust high bandwidth mmWave communication links for wearables. The project proposed practical channel models that incorporate the effects of wearable setting. The immediate impact of the research is an understanding of the potential for mmWave wearable network links. The long-term impact is in the realization of high-end wearable devices that offer an order-of-magnitude increase in throughput while managing latency.
