Project description
We found that the lipidic nano-particles of utilized drugs do not penetrate through Stratum Corneum layer of the skin. These nano-particles are localized at the surface forming a thin lipid layer, whereas PBS diffuses into the skin and leads to changes in the relative slope of OCT A-scans. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, that a front of molecular diffusion within the skin can be clearly observed by cross-correlations of successive 2D OCT images. Thus, OCT can provide a unique tool for the quantitative assessment of the dynamics of diffusion of drugs, target compounds, analytes, cosmetics and various chemical agents in living biological tissues in real time, non-invasively in vivo. An additional advantage of this technique is its ease of use, as it is not necessary to label the drug with fluorophores or radio isotopes, and analysis can performed immediately (within seconds) of application.
