Project description
Several solid-state device generations for producing sub-THz wavelets with low time jitter were developed and tested aiming at high center frequency, short pulse width and low time jitter. These devices were utilized in the time-domain THz spectroscopy in which measuring mode the sample and its properties are identified based on the measured transit time of the sub-THz pulse through the structure under study. This approach, suggested in this study has shown to have less diffraction as compared to the conventional absorption based measurement. Also, a way to enhance the recorded time intervals via interference has been identified and shown to alleviate the requirements for the precision of the needed instrumentation. The knowledge on the breakdown phenomena of compound semiconductors acquired during the project has also been utilized in the development of high speed/high current laser diode drivers for optical lidars and lidar based 3-D range imagers.
