Project description
Pulsed time-of-flight radar techniques are widely used in radio and optical wavelengths, but not yet in the millimetre-wave/sub-THz spectral range. Sub-THz radiation has however great potential in imaging due to its penetration through dielectrics and millimetre spatial resolution. Pulsed time-of-flight imaging based on sub-THz pulses requires sub-ps precision in the time-of-flight measurement. The sub-THz pulses should be generated with a miniaturized, and low-cost solid-state emitter operating at the room temperature. In the current project the aim is to develop the needed emitter with high power (several milliwatts) and operating frequency (0.4-1 THz). This paves way for new important applications within medical, security, industrial and building application fields, for example. Also, complete time-domain imaging systems based on this emitter and state-of-the art receiver and time interval measurement techniques will be constructed and demonstrated in potential applications.
