Project description
I study the place names of the multilingual municipality of Aanaar (Inari) located in northernmost Finland. The research material includes approximately 18 000 place names in Finnish, Inari, North and Skolt Saami. Additional information about the context is collected from archives and by interviewing local people. The study is interdisciplinary and joins approaches from several scientific disciplines. Central topics in the study are the borrowing of place names, contacts between languages, local history and place name stratigraphy. In addition, basic information about the constructions and vocabulary of place names will be produced. One aim is also to create a model that could be used to analyze a possible Saami origin of Finnish place names in more southern areas. The topics are dealt in local contexts as well as on more general, theoretical level, which makes the results universally applicable. The work is conducted at the Giellagas Institute for Saami Studies, University of Oulu.
