Project description
Recent observations have disclosed how dramatically variable the Sun has been during the last 100 years. From 1930s until 2000, the Sun was more active than during the last several thousand years. This time of exceptionally active Sun is now over, and solar cycle 24 remained at the low level of 100 years ago. Such long-term variations in solar activity are still poorly understood, mainly because solar polar magnetic fields are measured only since 40 years. Solar polar fields and coronal holes cause variations in solar wind and control, e.g., the acceleration and precipitation of energetic particles into the Earth's upper atmosphere. ReSoLVE studied this exceptional near past of the Sun, finding new, dramatic changes in solar corona and near-Earth space. We also developed solar dynamo models, extended information on coronal holes and examined solar-related effects to the the Earth's atmosphere and climate, finding new connections between solar wind and the winter polar vortex.
