Project description
Maximizing the scientific and industrial benefits from opportunities offered by all large international infrastructures in astronomy, necessitates national coordination, allocation of resources and long-term support for a strong institute with the critical mass. The Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO (FINCA) is the major unifying component in Finnish astronomy, supported by all the universities engaged in astronomical research, and the creation of a Finnish Research Infrastructure would consolidate this status. FINCA focuses on extragalactic research with and innovations provided by the large ESO telescopes (VLT, ALMA, E-ELT), but also participates e.g., in NOT, and Euclid, highlighting its unique unifying function. FINCA promotes participation of Finnish industry in the design of the E-ELT, to develop new technologies likely to find applications also outside astronomy, and participates in the design and construction of the NOT/NTE, NTT/SOXS and E-ELT/MOSAIC instruments.
