Project description
Strong couplings between electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of ferroelectrics enables a direct utilization of these materials especially in sensor and energy applications. Recent research results demonstrate that many essential phenomena, such as piezo- and pyroelectricity, and newly discovered functionalities of ferroelectric materials are critically related to micro- and nanoscale details of the polar domain structure. The objective of this project is to enable a large-scale and advanced control of ferroelectric domain configuration in thin film heterostructures by mechanical substrate deformation. The formation and changes in domain structure and mechanical strains are studied first by using different materials and deposition parameters, and later on by using active substrate deformation. Finally, the effect of adjusted domain configuration on functional properties is evaluated especially by means of different electrical measurements.
