Project description
Wheat, rye, oats, and pea were grown in greenhouse conditions to study the accumulation of bromine (Br) to the plants. Plants grown in non-spiked soil were compared with the same plants grown in the soil contaminated with different compounds of Br. The plant samples were leached with TMAH and elemental analysis was performed with ICP-OES and ICP-MS techniques. It was found that all the plant species were able to accumulate large amounts of Br. Oats was capable to accumulate highest concentrations, especially when potassium bromide was added to the soil. In most cases the addition of potassium bromide affected positively the plant growth. However, for example the addition of ammonium bromide decreased the plant biomass. A scientific publication on the experimental results of the research was published in 2017 in the J. of Geochem. Explor. Another manuscript is under evaluation in Int. J. of Phytoremediation.
