Project description
The application is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind strong biomarkers of all-cause mortality and assess the possibility of clinical utility in high-risk patient groups: alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, citrate, albumin and the diameter of very-low-density lipoprotein particles. The objectives will include utilization of gene expression data from two independent study samples to obtain information from the molecular background of the biomarkers, and electronic health records from hospital discharge and death records are harnessed to gain insight into the pathophysiological processes that the biomarkers are descriptive of. Finally, I will utilize the biomarkers to evaluate, whether they would contain additive value for risk assessment and treatment decisions in high mortality risk patient setting. The implications of the proposed research could constitute an important step towards the development of personalized treatment tailored to the biological state of the individual.
