Project description
Despite the advances that have been made in developing new therapeutics, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of worldwide mortality. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular tissue pathologies is of major importance. Cardiac fibrosis is a process of increased fibroblast activity that leads to excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix in the myocardium. Myocardial fibrosis results in increased ventricular stiffness and predisposes to cardiac arrhythmias. Currently, there are no approved medications for treatment or prevention of fibrosis in the heart. Aim of this research is to identify novel regulators of myocardial fibrosis. Characterization of key regulators and signalling mechanisms in cardiac fibroblasts is likely to lead to identification of new diagnostic opportunities and may provide novel targets for treatment, including anti-fibrotic therapeutics.
