Project description
This project obtains fundamental knowledge of the structure and physicochemical properties of free-standing nanomaterials. The research benefits from unique properties of novel light sources like synchrotrons and free electron lasers, which can obtain information from the nanoparticles' surface. The role of surface is of utmost importance in catalysis and its industrial applications: nanoparticles are used in order to provide enormously more surface to the chemical reactions to occur compared to bulk materials. Not only quantity is important: nanomaterials have also unique properties which can be used to enhance materials’ efficiency in energy conversion and energy storage technologies. Nano-sized particles are not only produced industrially: we are exposed daily to naturally produced agglomerates of atoms and molecules. Important environmental issues like climate evolution have been related to physicochemical properties of small agglomerates of molecules like water-salt clusters.
