Project description
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering skin disease, which occurs mainly in elderly people. Its symptoms include large blisters and severe pruritus. BP is a chronic disease that is associated with heightened mortality rate. The incidence of BP has increased in recent years in several countries, including Finland. We have obtained data from the records on 5430 BP patients, and will analyze the effects of co-morbidities and treatment on the incidence and prognosis of BP. Of special interest is the connection between BP and Alzheimer's disease. BP is caused by autoantibodies targeting structures that maintain the adhesion between skin layers. Our research group has created an animal model of BP wherein the mice spontaneously develop blisters and itching. We will study the pathomechanisms of autoimmunity and pruritus. The mouse model may also be a useful tool for research on neurological symptoms, as well as the development of new treatment of BP.
