Project description
The objective of this project was to support the energy transition process by 2050. The focus was first on smart buildings. Research showed that increased awareness can reduce electricity consumption in homes. However, it is more important to aim at reducing environmental impacts. Research showed that, with smart control, the CO2 emissions of household electricity consumption could be reduced up to 15% by flattening consumption peaks. On the long term, the decarbonization of European electricity mix by 2050 was also evaluated based on environmental impact -based prioritisation. Most studies on the future of European power system rely on least-cost evaluations. Our research showed that decisions on investments based on environmental criteria were more optimal. It was concluded that considering an environmental, instead of an economic prioritization, the decarbonisation of Europe can be achieved slightly faster, resulting in lower cumulative greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere.
