Project description
The main aim of the project was to develop and validate computational models of bone and cartilage adaptation to loading in the knee. Based on extensive experimental characterization of knee joint tissues, finite element knee joint models were developed. They were integrated with an adaptation algorithm to enable prediction of abnormal mechanical loading-driven alterations in cartilage and bone properties in health, injury and disease. We found that mechanical and structural properties of bone and ligaments contribute significantly to the forces and deformations experienced by knee joint surfaces, and to the risk of osteoarthritis. Our developed model integrated with the adaptive algorithm was able to predict the progression of osteoarthritis consistent with experimental follow-up. The current project provided a foundation for the next generation adaptive computational knee joint modeling to support clinical decision making in proper selection of treatment.
