Project description
In this project, we developed new analysis software tools and used those in studying the ionized upper atmosphere of the Earth, the ionosphere. The methods enable 3D reconstructions of ionospheric electron density based on GNSS satellite receiver network data, estimation of precipitating electron energy spectra by incoherent scatter radars, calculation of ionospheric electrical currents by multipoint satellite observations, and detection of high-speed solar wind streams from solar wind satellite data. The response of auroral ionosphere to space weather disturbances was studied. For solar wind high-speed streams, both days-long depletions in electron density as well as short-lived strong increases in electron precipitation in the lower ionosphere were observed. Our results can be utilized in developing space weather services.
