Project description
Deeper understanding of the impacts of climate change on Earth surface systems (ESSs) is fundamental to science and society. This is highly relevant in the Arctic, where geomorphological ESS processes control ecosystems and human activity. The INFRAHAZARD project modelled the Arctic ESSs in a changing climate and produced geospatial data-based infrastructure risk assessment for decision making and land use planning. For the first time the sensitivities of ESSs and their relation to human activity were explored across the Arctic region. Our ground-breaking approach was to apply complementary geospatial and remote sensing based data at global, regional and local scales, and innovative modelling methodology. Our results (i) substantially improve understanding of geomorphological ESSs and their climate sensitivity in the Arctic and (ii) show that fundamental Arctic infrastructure are at high risk by 2050.
