Project description
COMP strives for research excellence, measured in terms of international recognition, overall performance and impact, success in researcher training, and public outreach and visibility. The planned activities for the period 2015-17 build on COMP's strong core competences, extend these toward new, advanced methodologies and their applications to condensed-matter sciences, from atomic- and nanometer-scale investigations to complex materials and processes in physics, chemistry and materials science. The foci of the research are: i) understanding, predicting, and designing materials properties from first principles, in their ground state and their excitations and dynamics; ii) exploration of the entangled quantum world in the quest for new concepts and devices; and iii) the application of statistical-physics ideas and methods to investigate new, multiscale phenomena in materials, processes, and complex, coupled and adaptive systems.
