Project description
The ARCRESPO project focused on developing novel green chemicals for the Arctic oil spill response. The specific targets were to use Northern cellulose and chitosan based bioresources to fabricate green surfactants, investigate their toxicity and biodegradability in marine environment, and address their performance as dispersing and herding agents for oil spill response in the Arctic conditions. During the project several sustainable approaches to fabricate green surfactants were successfully developed, and their feasibility in the Arctic oil spill response was demonstrated. These openings pave the way for sustainable production of new type of green chemicals which can be harnessed also in several other application fields such as in food and cosmetic industries. Moreover, the results help to understand the behavior of chemicals in the Arctic conditions, and promote the sustainable use of Northern resources.
