Project description
Noble metals have a wide range of applications in the modern society and the demand for them is expected to grow. However, there are only limited resources of noble metals as they are scarce on earth. The recovery of minerals from recycled materials, or so-called ‘urban mining,’ is an expanding industrial branch. The amount of gold in scrapped electronics, for example, may be up to 10-100 times that of ore. Currently used methods for dissolution and recovery of noble metals are potentially harmful both to humans and environment. Based on our previous thiol/alcohol method, the project aimed for the development of efficient, sustainable and safe etchants for selective dissolution and recovery methods of noble metals, including Au, Ag, Cu, Pt and Pd. The focus of the project was in reaction mechanism, selectivity of the etchant for different noble metals and in applying the method for waste electronics.
