Project description
Metal mining industry in Finland has expanded in recent decades. Effluents released by mining operations may alter aquatic ecosystems radically extending their effects to the usability of ecosystem services. Metals in particulate and colloidal form or as complexes with natural organic material do not pose immediate threat as they are less bioavailable than dissolved metals. Their release to environment may lead to mobilization of metals in the long run, since the binding to organic material is reversible. The objective of the study is to gain information on the effects of metal and organic material loads to downstream water bodies, to understand the transport mechanisms, abiotic and biotic fate in boreal conditions and evaluate the environmental impacts to aquatic ecosystems and human health including risk perception. The final risk assessment yields directly applicable information needed in ecotoxicological risk assessment and management of open pitch ore mining activities.
