Project description
A consortium combining the expertise of leading ore researchers at the Geological Survey of Finland and University of Oulu, as well as several foreign universities and mining companies was formed to characterize orogenic gold and magmatic Ni-Cu, Cr and Fe-Ti-V mineral systems and examine their origin in northern Finland using cutting-edge analytical techniques. Most of the studies were focused on the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt, the Kuusamo Belt and the Peräpohja belt. Much new information was obtained from a great number of individual ore deposits or ore showings in terms of their mineralogical, chemical and isotopic properties, timing of formation and factors controlling their genesis. These data were published in three academic dissertations and tens of articles. New mineral prospectivity maps were compiled to better predict potential areas for gold exploration. Results of the project will promote exploration for new metallic resources in northern Finland.
