Project description
The study examined pragmatic language in young adults with autism spectrum disorder and their controls using mostly video based pragmatically challenging tasks. Eye-tracking was used to study where participants directed their attention when looking at pragmatically challenging situations. In this study pragmatic skills between Finnish and Italian participants were also compared. The work was carried out as collaboration with the Research Unit of Logopedics and the Clinic of Child Psychiatry in the University of Oulu and it belongs to the multidisciplinary study named the Autism Spectrum Disorders – a follow-up study from childhood to young adulthood. At the moment, individuals’ current pragmatic performance has been compared to the performance in pragmatic comprehension tasks in childhood. Only by knowing the nature of pragmatic difficulties, its background factors and the developmental pathway it is possible to plan more effective intervention in the future.
