Project description
In this research, contrast agent enhanced X-ray imaging of cartilage, using modern high resolution cone beam CT (CBCT), was developed. The method enabled high resolution imaging of joint structures with low radiation dose, as well as monitoring the contrast agent diffusion into cartilage. Especially, we modelled the diffusion mathematically and measured it experimentally to reveal its differences in intact and degenerated cartilage. We also combined CBCT analysis of cartilage and subchondral bone, and tested characteristics of both tissues in healthy and OA joints. Finally, the CBCT was used to record deformation of cartilage during joint loading, and using numerical modeling, we derived cartilage mechanical properties in vivo. This method could indicate patient-specifically the joint status, and potentially the risk to OA. The novel methodology was found feasible, and could significantly improve the clinical diagnostics of early OA.
