Project description
The research project analyzed how non-governmental organisations and private firms participate in border enforcement and asylum reception in Europe and the United States. Initially, the project focused on private firms, but the research quickly revealed that a diverse array of humanitarian, faith-based, social enterprise, and private firms participate in border enforcement and asylum reception activities. The researcher found that state agencies also participate in the commercialisation of specific border enforcement activities and that the boundary between public and private is instead a complex governmental arrangement. Based on these findings, the researcher developed a novel conceptual approach to the commercialisation of border enforcement and asylum reception. Focusing on large migration events in 2014 and 2015, the researcher found that humanitarian crisis and border enforcement complement and contradict each other with important implications for governing borders.
