Project description
The primary objective of this project was to develop 3D histopathological grading method for osteoarthritis (OA) using micro-CT technologies in vitro. We were the first to report that it is possible to reliably image micro-level structure and composition of articular cartilage and subchondral bone in 3D with micro-CT using contrast enhancement for cartilage. We also found that micro-level 3D structure and composition of human osteochondral tissues changes along with osteoarthritis progression. Importantly, we were the first research group in the world to establish a comprehensive, semi-quantitative 3D histopathological grading system for human osteochondral samples using PTA-enhanced micro-CT. Furthermore, we created machine learning based algorithm and pipeline to automatically conduct 3D histopathological grading of osteochondral samples.
