Project description
The NETCOBRA project has focused on distributed lossless and lossy multi-terminal binary source coding and lossy forwarding (LF) wireless relaying systems. Unlike the conventional relaying systems, with the LF relaying, even if relay detects errors, the information sequence is re-interleaved, re-encoded and forwarded to the destination. We found that this system is equivalent to source coding with a helper problem. We derived mathematical key equations, and evaluated the outage performance. It has been shown that significant improvement can be achieved. The results have been found for the first time in the world. We further applied the LF concept to the multi-route multi-hop network where there are no tandem connections with relays having no errors inserted before encoding. Then, the relay selects re-transmission or LF, depending on the results of the on-line reliability measurement. It can achieve significant improvement in throughput over the conventional techniques.
