Project description
We have assessed both short-term and long-term effects of environmental exposures related to changing climate on asthma and allergies, and mortality in a population-based Espoo Cohort Study. The focus was on health effects of air pollution, allergenic pollen and extreme climatic factors. We have applied new modelling approaches for air pollution and pollen, statistical environmental and information technologies, genetics, clinical medicine and epidemiology. In particular, we have computed long-term (more than 35 years) urban and global air pollution, meteorology and allergenic pollen concentrations. These high-resolution datasets are unique and scientifically valuable. This study has contributed to improved understanding of the environmental impacts of air pollution and allergenic pollen. The data and results can and will be used for health impact assessments, and for health care and community planning in the Helsinki region and worldwide.
