Project description
Detection, grading, and delineation of cartilage lesions are of utmost importance for successful surgical repair. However, reproducibility of traditional arthroscopic evaluation based on visual assessment and manual palpation is poor. Therefore, more sophisticated and quantitative arthroscopic techniques are required. In this project potential of optical coherence tomography (OCT), ultrasound imaging and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for quantitative evaluation of cartilage was investigated. In addition, we designed, manufactured and tested a novel arthroscopic instrument based on NIRS. Ultrasound enabled evaluation of cartilage collagen network, NIRS analysis of cartilage composition and OCT provided high resolution information on cartilage surface fibrillation and enabled automatic scoring of injury severity. In summary, the project produced valuable scientific knowledge and technological innovations leading to introduction of a novel clinically applicable arthroscopic intrument.
