Project description
This is a four-year project to study the solar-terrestrial plasmas utilizing a newly developed computer simulation tool called Vlasiator. The tool offers a unique opportunity to discoveries, as it can bring to the reach of global models so-called kinetic physics, which is the only correct way to describe small spatial scales related to the motion of the individual particles in the plasma system. As a result of our studies, great advance beyond the present state-of-the-art is expected both in the physics of the solar corona and the magnetosphere. This project is extremely timely now that the supercomputing facilities start to be large enough to facilitate global kinetic scale physics, i.e., bringing together the physics of the small scales and the large scales. Our team has the unique opportunity to utilize Vlasiator and data from new spacecraft missions. This will be crucial in understanding the foundations of space weather phenomena, which can harm satellites and humans in orbit.
