Project description
The project focused on preventing children’s marginalization in day care centers and schools. In day care centers, an intensive process was implemented where educators and researchers developed practices for promoting children’s belonging and participation. In the school context, the project focused on experts’ reports about pupils who have been regarded troubled. The sub-studies revealed that belonging and exclusion concern children regardless their age, gender and ethnic background. Belonging and exclusion emerged as a phenomenon that was produced through the social interaction, material environment, and cultural practices of educational settings. Narrative and discursive practices as well as official documents were significant for producing similarity and differences by expressing children as being outside or inside the community.
