Project description
The aim of the research project is to develop circuits and devices for accurate multi-channel time interval measurement and for the generation of high-speed optical and electrical transients. The goal in terms of time interval measurement is to reach a precision at the level of 1ps over a wide measurement range. With regard to the generation of transients the focus will be on a new laser diode which can produce an intensive optical spike based on its inherent operation even with modest driving requirements, and on the study and applications of avalanche breakdown in Si and GaAs transistors. Time-domain timing discrimination and CMOS Geiger mode detection principles will be developed for pulse detection. The circuits and devices developed in this context will be applied to pulsed time-offlight laser ranging and Raman spectroscopy.
