Project description
Wastewaters contain often organic solvents and degradation products which are harmful and toxic. This has led to stricter regulations related to wastewater. Project aimed at studying advanced oxidation processes (catalytic wet air oxidation, photocatalysis) in the treatment of wastewaters from pharmaceutical and food industry. For these waters no economical and technically viable solution exists. A hybrid catalyst was developed that first decomposes large organic molecules and then mineralizes the rest at higher temperatures and pressures. Effect of treatments on the biodegradability and toxicity were evaluated, which required a multidisciplinary approach. Oxidation treatments improved the biodegradability of organic compounds and decreased the toxicity, which was observed especially with model solutions (bisphenol-A, diuron). The efficient wastewater treatment is a step towards closing the water cycles in industry and to sustainable water use.
