Project description
We defined the contribution of two extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, collagens XV and XVIII, in different cancer types, as well as the role of collagen XV in heart after acute myocardial infarction (MI). Our results demonstrate that these collagens are expressed in different sites of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and may contribute in a distinct manner to processes related to cSCC tumourigenesis, identifying them as potential biomarkers in the disease. In addition, we observed that patients with colorectal cancer had higher serum endostatin levels than the controls, and this associates with tumour invasion and poor differentiation, and shows a positive correlation with the markers of systemic inflammatory response. With the myocardial infacrtion model in mice we showed that collagen XV has a role in ECM remodeling of the MI scar after acute ischemia. In general the project enlarges the basic knowledge of collagens in different physiological and pathological processes.
