Organic compounds found in atmospheric aerosol particles interact with water in complex ways. This can lead to surprising properties of their aqueous solutions, such as cloud droplets formed when water condenses on particle surfaces. Organic compounds from the atmosphere were found to be surface active, as is often expected but rarely confirmed. This surface activity gives rise to significantly different manifestations of organic acidity and chemical reactivity in the aqueous surface, compared to bulk samples. It also leads to the surface itself directly interfering with water uptake and cloud formation of surface active organic particles. For chemically complex organic aerosol, the combined effects of many individual properties and interactions may be expressed by a simple dependence on the organic fraction. With this framework complex aerosol can be included in large scale atmospheric simulations and climate models, but the general applicability must be further investigated.
