Project description
Cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions are fundamental in cellular differentiation, organ development and tissue homeostasis, and in many diseases. The roles of positional signals (growth factors and hypoxia), structure (collagens and their synthesis/turnover), intrinsic genetic and epigenetic properties, and sensing (cell-ECM interactions) in central biological processes and selected microenvironmental cell niches are addressed in the proposed CoE through an integrated effort of the consortium. The results can be expected to lead to new diagnostic measures and novel concepts for therapeutic approaches. Our objectives will be reached through an innovative combination of genetic (mouse and human), molecular, organo-genomics, mechanotransduction and cell biological approaches. We believe that the investigators of this consortium are together uniquely positioned to carry out scientific objectives of high biomedical relevance and otherwise not achievable anywhere else in the world.
