Project description
The dangerous salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris destroyed 45 Norwegian salmon rivers, and until now, one in the White Sea basin. The pathogenic parasite strains belong to a species and genus which have numerous less dangerous forms, on freshwater fishes in Eurasia. Based on full genome sequencing, as well as population genetic analysis, we try to characterize the causality of the pathogenicity among salmon and the parasite. At first step, the genome sequence produces markers for analyzing the breeding system of the parasite (sexual vs asexual), to recognize the pathogenic and benign parasite strains and their evolutionary history.
