Project description
The consortium used various methods of biomedicine, genetics, epidemiology and NMR metabonomics in order to study metabolic disturbances of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, the consortium studied environmental factors and dietary habits in order to find the special characteristics among subjects at high risk for MetS. The results increase our knowledge of genetic and metabolic mechanisms of cardiovascular risk factors at the molecular level and therefore enhance the possibility of evidence-based screening of high risk individuals. In addition, the findings underscore the importance of early whole-family approach to childhood obesity prevention. An ICT-based web-application and two group counseling methods were developed in the project in order to improve lifestyle counseling that focus on the modification of the eating behavior. These methods will be evaluated in an intervention trial of 600 study subjects.
