Project description
We have previously shown that otherwise healthy young adults born as small preterms have increased risk factors of cardiovascular disease and some mental health disorders. Whether these risks apply to those born moderately preterm is poorly known. The aim of this project is to study the effects of preterm birth on 1) components and comorbidities of the metabolic syndrome; 2) transition to adulthood; and 3) linking mechanisms. We have performed a detailed clinical examination on 1161 young adults born in Northern Finland 1985-1989. We focus on mechanisms, protective factors and potential targets for intervention. We expect the first results to be available during 2013.
