Project description
The project aims to learn human-animal relationship among Finland's Sámi 1000-1800 AD based on the bones placed as offerings at the sieidi. The project has two parts: One is purely archaeological and studies the ritual significance of the sieidi and iof the animals offered there. The other is bioarchaeological and uses osteological, stable isotope and ancient DNA analyses to determine: (1) Whether the 600 year old sheep found at the Inari sieidi were grown locally or imported, and if imported where from. (2) whether the reindeer bones offered at the sieidi were wild, herded or household animals.
